Stephanie Harten’s class with their freshly decorated crescent moons

Second Graders Decorate for Eid

Second graders in Stephanie Harten’s class at William B. Ward Elementary decorated crescent moons in celebration of Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan, a month-long prayer and fasting period for Muslims.

The activity began with students reading “It’s Ramadan, Curious George,” and learning about how Ramadan begins and culminates when the moon is in a crescent position, how fasting takes place during the holiday, and how families gather to enjoy each other’s company.

Rania Albrashi, a student-teacher from IONA University, wrote each student’s name in Arabic on their moon.

“I think it is so cool that my name is written in Arabic, it looks so pretty,” said Khalesi O.

“It was exciting to design our own moon, in our own style,” said Rory O.

“I like the activity because I like designing things and I am thankful Ms. Rania thought of this,” Lennox B. said.
