From the Office of the Acting City Manager

Dear Neighbors,

This month’s column is a summary of our latest news and events, beginning with the important issue of Flood Mitigation. We concluded our Council District Stormwater Meetings in July. I want to thank everyone who came out for the presentations and for the comments and feedback provided. If you couldn’t attend, the PowerPoints are posted on the City website newrochelleny.com/flooding. As mentioned at the meetings, the City has designated $10 million this year for several large mitigation projects that will alleviate flooding issues. The first, located at Harmon and Storer Avenues, began in July. We expect to continue with several additional projects this year, along with smaller-scale projects. This is in addition to our enhanced and expanded catch basin cleaning schedule. We were gratified to receive a NYS $1.130M Climate Smart Community grant to upgrade stormwater infrastructure in the neighborhood of Ashland Street, East Place, Crestview Street and Chatsworth Place, and will continue to seek additional funding from all sources for our mitigation efforts Citywide.

On the subject of infrastructure, a major capital project is underway at the Municipal Marina. The old Marina Parking Deck at the intersection of Pelham Road and Echo Avenue, deteriorated and beyond repair, is being demolished and rebuilt. This investment underscores our commitment to the facilities that shape our community, and will enhance the overall experience for everyone who comes down to enjoy the waterfront.

The warmer weather is when many of our paving and roadway projects are accomplished. Our 2024 paving schedule is listed online at newrochelleny.com/paving and the calendar shows the weekly schedule. We are preparing for a major project in the downtown this fall: Main Street will be paved from Pintard Avenue to North Avenue in September. This will bring much-needed relief to our business owners and residents who have exercised great patience while the important upgrades under the roadway- to gas, sewer, stormwater and cable systems- were accomplished.

This summer, our community calendar is filled with events. Our 2nd annual Downtown Summer Sizzle has a world-class lineup at Ruby Dee Park every Saturday night through September, and on Wednesdays and Fridays the New Rochelle Council on the Arts Summer Sounds series brings a wide variety of musical acts to the Hudson Park bandshell. On Thursdays until August 8, enjoy expanded outdoor seating and live “Jazz Under the Stars” at our newest event, “Taste of Anderson Plaza”. Other August events include a new Teen Fest on Saturday August 3 at Ruby Dee Park, National Night out at Police Headquarters on August 6,  the Youth Bureau and Parks & Recreation’s Backpack Giveaway at City Hall on Friday, August 16, and on August 18 the “Celebrate Lafayette” historical event at Ruby Dee Park. Access information on all of these events at our website newrochelleny.com/events.

Finally, our Civil Service Department lists open jobs for the City, School District and Library. Last month we held an employment fair that brought over a hundred job-seekers to City Hall. One important job notice is that of the Police Officer exam. The test is upcoming on September 28 and the application deadline is August 9 at 4PM.  Find out more how you can join the NRPD team at NRPDHireMe.com.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer.
