City of New Rochelle Announces Partnership with HELPSY

The City of New Rochelle, in collaboration with Westchester County, is proud to announce their partnership with Helpsy to offer a free and easy home pickup clothing and textile recycling service for the local community. Pickups in New Rochelle will take place weekly by appointment on Saturdays between 7AM-5PM, starting November 2. Accommodations can be made for religious observances. The community can sign up at www.helpsy.co/newrochelleny or can call  1-800-244-6350.

As the 57th municipality to partner with Helpsy to provide free home pickup service, New Rochelle is joining fourteen other Westchester towns and villages in making it as easy as possible for residents to responsibly dispose of their unwanted clothing. Home pickups save the City money on disposal fees and save the planet resources by keeping clothes out of the trash.

“We are excited to begin this partnership with Helpsy,” said Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert. “By separating out clothing, textiles and more for recycling and repurposing, we are reducing the City’s trash volume and saving taxpayer dollars. And, the benefit of home pickup makes it easy for our residents to participate.”

In addition to clothing, Helpsy’s recycling program provides residents the opportunity to recycle shoes, sneakers, slippers, boots, backpacks, purses, duffle bags, gloves, sheets, towels, blankets, curtains, leather, throw rugs, pet clothing, and more. The items can be in any condition (torn, worn, stained, broken zippers, etc.) as long as they are clean, dry, and odorless. See a complete list of accepted items.

As a clothing collection company and a certified B corporation with an environmental mission to extend the useful life of clothing, Helpsy partners with municipalities and organizations across 10 states to collect unwanted clothing.  Helpsy operates 1,200 clothing collection points and provides free curbside service to millions of Americans. The company funds numerous charities and thrift stores to give consumers convenient and compelling alternatives to garbage. Currently they collect an item of clothing every second.

“Helpsy’s mission is to keep clothes out of the trash,” says Dan Green, Co-Founder and CEO of Helpsy. “We are dedicated to changing the way people think about clothing recycling while adhering to the highest level of social and environmental performance.”

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, textile waste is the fastest-growing type of trash in the country. Americans throw 85% of their clothes in the trash, which is why Helpsy is committed to working with organizations and cities like New Rochelle. In 2023 alone, Helpsy diverted nearly 30 million pounds of textiles from the waste stream through a combination of clothing drives, home pickups, thrift store partners and clothing bins.
