Science Research Sophomores Take Home Honors

New Rochelle High School’s Science Research sophomores excelled at the Somers Science Fair on June 6, bringing home 24 awards, including 11 first-place prizes. Student projects covered topics such as biochemistry, medicine, environmental science, and behavior.

New Rochelle’s 46 sophomores competed with 874 students from more than 40 schools across the region. 

“Our young scientists absolutely crushed it,” said Jeff Wuebber, program co-teacher. Erica Curran, who runs the program with Wuebber, added, “And a huge overall thank you to all parents, teachers, and administration for your outstanding support over the entire school year. We could not have done it without you!”

The following students won awards in first, second, and third place categories: 

First Place–Harrison Desimini, Medicine & Health; Chloe Chiu, Bioinformatics; Katherine Kann, Biochemistry; Benji Salama, Behavior; Lilia Hafid, Behavior; Anne DePaolo & Cami Edwards, Behavior; Andrew Babu, Behavior; Alina Rezvi, Behavior; Ellie Rosenbluth, Behavior; Emily Erber, Behavior; and Lia Seelenfreund, Behavior.

Second Place–Jesus Barajas, Medicine & Health; Sky Cannistraci, Environmental Science; Fiyin Egieya, Cellular and Molecular Biology; Olivia Schwarcz, Behavior; Ellie Fine, Behavior; Caitlin Bach, Behavior; and Evelyn Menkes, Behavior.

Third Place–Dylan Lehrman, Medicine & Health; Olivia Solomon, Medicine & Health; Emma Salierno, Medicine & Health; Juliet Rueda, Engineering; Daniel Fryxell, Cellular and Molecular Biology; and Hendrix Rumph, Behavior.

The program teachers offered thanks to parent volunteers Phil Paterra and Molly Schultz-Hafid for picking up the posters; Ana Lopez for creating the snack bags for students; and Sarah Desimini, David Rosenbluth, Rachelle Rumph, Leslie Lehrman, Rachel Barbanel-Fried, Kristen Fusco, Ivonne Droese-Solomon, Molly Schultz-Hafid, David Hirschl, and David Rosenbluth for serving as judges.
