Former New York Giant David Tyree Makes Special Guest Appearance at Iona Prep Father-Son Breakfast

Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle hosted former New York Giants wide receiver David Tyree at their annual Father-Son Breakfast on Sunday, March 10, inside the Willima J. Tully Gymnasium in New Rochelle.  Speaking to more than 300 boys, dads, uncles, and grandfathers, Tyree spoke about what it was like to play for the NY hometown team, his personal journeys of faith and family in reaching the pinnacle of his profession, and of course, his iconic catch in the final two minutes of Super Bowl XLII in 2008 –  the ball trapped inexplicably between his hands and his helmet –  that lead to the Giants hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The Father-Son Breakfast first began as a community builder some 60 years ago with former owner and Iona Prep parent Wellington T. Mara P’72,’75,’76,’78 getting Giants players to attend the breakfast when his four sons attended during the 1970s.  Previous speakers have included Marcus McKethan and Elerson Smith (2023), Xavier McKinney (2022), Rhett Ellison (2019), Darian Thompson (2018), Will Tye (2017), Zak DeOssie (2016) and Devon Kennard (2015), of recent memory.

Mara famously used to sit with his friend, Michael A. Ward ’51, P’78,’79,’81, GP’13, HOF’10, on “The Hill” between the field now bearing his name and the school, watching Gaels football.
