Town of Mamaroneck Passes
Climate Emergency Declaration

On November 17, the Mamaroneck Town Board adopted a Climate Emergency Declaration, following the lead of Westchester County and the City of New Rochelle. They join 2,043 jurisdictions in 37 countries who have declared a climate emergency, affecting more than 1 billion people. This declaration spurs communities to look at laws, budgets, and events all through the lens of this climate emergency.

Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson thanked the Town’s environmental committee, the Sustainability Collaborative, and in particular committee member Beth Radow, for bringing this declaration to the attention of the Town Board. Supervisor Seligson said, “It’s important for local governments to recognize our responsibility and opportunity to combat climate change to protect our communities. We look to improve community outreach and education and look to secure funding sources to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Town of Mamaroneck.”

Sustainability Collaborative Chair Mitch Green said, “The Sustainability Collaborative wrote the first Sustainability and Resiliency Plan for the Town and looks forward to updating the plan to reflect the growing crisis and assisting the Board in formulating the Town’s Climate Emergency Response.” 

Beth Radow reflected, upon hearing the news, “Preserving earth’s habitats calls on all of us to act with purpose. Our local government, by enacting this legislation, has demonstrated the responsible leadership needed to take effective action.”
