U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer Endorses
Rep. Jamaal Bowman for Re-election in NY-16

New York Senator and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer endorsed Congressman Jamaal Bowman for re-election. Over the past year, Rep. Bowman has worked closely with New York’s senior senator to deliver for his district locally and effect change nationally. Senator Schumer’s support is telling of Rep. Bowman’s ability to build productive relationships across the Democratic Party and work with his colleagues to deliver results for his district.

“I am very pleased to endorse my friend and partner, Representative Jamaal Bowman, for reelection in the 16th Congressional District in the Bronx, Westchester and Putnam. He is smart, hard-working, passionate and extremely effective. From fighting to reduce the burden of overwhelming student debt, to delivering millions for New Rochelle’s transformative LINC road-safety project, to passing COVID relief laws that fund everything from free vaccinations to schools to MetroNorth, to securing local aid from Bedford to Carmel to Yonkers that kept public servants on the job, Rep. Jamaal Bowman has been a vital partner in delivering for the people of this district. I look forward to continuing to work with Jamaal as we make progress on upgrading Mount Vernon’s aged sewer system and building the new MetroNorth line from New Rochelle direct to Penn Station – as well as fighting broader issues like climate change and the scourge of guns in our communities. Representative Jamaal Bowman has my strong support,” said Senator Chuck Schumer.

Over the last year, Rep. Bowman and Senator Schumer have been able to work collaboratively to bring much-needed resources to New York and specifically to NY-16, especially when it comes to transportation and infrastructure. They worked together to secure $88 million in flood relief for Mamaroneck and FEMA relief across the district following the devastation caused by Hurricane Ida. Last December, Rep. Bowman and Sen. Schumer also announced that the Amtrak and MTA reached an agreement that would open up an entirely new rail for Metro-North Station and drastically increase transportation in Co-Op City and improve service in New Rochelle. Senator Schumer and Rep. Bowman also worked together to push for a wastewater infrastructure investment to be included in the American Jobs Plan and voted to pass President Biden’s American Rescue Plan.

Together, Rep. Bowman and Senator Schumer have also secured $12 million for greenspaces in New Rochelle and worked to bring more vaccination sites into NY-16. Sen. Schumer and Rep. Bowman introduced and passed a congressional resolution acknowledging the Bronx as the birthplace of hip-hop and making November National Hip Hop History Month.

“I am proud to receive this endorsement from Senator Schumer,” said Congressman Jamaal Bowman. “This year we worked together to pass historic legislation for my district. Despite a gridlock in the Senate, we were able to secure tens of millions in funding for my district, pass a resolution recognizing the cultural importance and impact of hip-hop, and pass President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. This is just the beginning. I look forward to working with Senator Schumer for years to come and endorse his own re-election to the Senate, because there’s more work to do, and he’s the one who can help get it done.”

This endorsement underscores Rep. Bowman’s influence and the significant impact he’s been able to have in Congress as a freshman representative.

Congressman Jamaal Bowman was an educator and advocate for public schools for over 20 years and previously served as principal for the Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA), a public middle school he founded in 2009 in the Baychester neighborhood of The Bronx.
